Battlefield Heroes Review

So, I just recently got a beta key for the highly anticipated game and would like to start this review off by saying, it matched most of my expectations. For some reason, I am under breach of contract for publishing screenshots, but youtube videos are okay? Anyway, this will be a screenshotless review until EA gives me permission to use their screenshots, sorry normally i dont follow the rules but i dont want to lost my beta key.

Anyway, battlefield heroes like all of the other battlefield heroes games is a 3rd person team-based class-based shooter. The game for now has 3 classes, commando, gunner, and soldier. I started out as a commando class. The commando is like the sneaky class, similar to the spy in TF2. He is defaultly equiped with a sniper rifle, a knife, and the ability to become invisible. That being said, he also has the least health. However, as you level up, you can use Hero Points, points you get every two levels, to acquire new abilities ie. make your rifle shots more damaging or make your invisibility have a larger radius. I think commando is really fun simply because I really enjoy sniping, its fun hiding up in a tower or riding on a plane and sniping the other team just as they think they are going to capture the flag =).

On that note lets move to rules. Their are two teams/factions in the game. Royals and Nationals, both are similarly created so that they are balanced. (The weapons are named differently). A round consists of each teaming starting with 50 points. Each kill is a default one point. The team to reach zero first loses. Simple, well not really. In addition there are 4 flags on any map. The team with more flags captured will be able to take away more points/kill, so the game also involves some strategy, not just a free for all shooter type round. Capturing the flags is relatively easy, but so is losing them, with the help of vehicles.

Their are 3 main vehicles in the game, tanks, jeeps, and airplanes. Tanks are by far the strongest, with the most armor and their shots do the most damage. Jeeps are faster than tanks but are also lighter and can be destroyed with one tank shot. Planes are the fastest, and they are also relatively weak, but are good for parachuting your teammates behind enemy lines or for kamikaze'ing into tanks =). Any kills, including these, and flag captures get you experience points.

Experience points or valor points as they are called in game, can be used to buy new weapons, clothing and widgets, or items like bandages/elixers... You can buy most of these items for a set time period, so this balances the game out even more. Hero points are gained once every two levels, and they let you upgrade your abilities. In addition, you can also pay for battlefunds to buy additional clothing or taunts (not weapons or abilities though). On any given map you will see a variety of different characters, each decked out with their own style.

Their are 3 maps as of now in the game. Seaside Skirmish, Victory Village, and Buccanneer Bay. Seaside Skirmish and Buccanneer Bay are the larger ones and have planes.

The graphics are pretty good. The game is very well optitimized to run on even the lowest PC's. I even tried it on Linux with WINE. Anyway, sound is also decent, but gets kind of repetitive after a while.

All in all, battlefield heroes is shaping up to be a very good game, especially since its free. In addition, this also gives it access to constant updates so be on the look out for more in-game content.
